Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was relieved after his team finally got their first win this edition of the IPL with a six-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals on Tuesday. The five-time MI champions were defeated in their first two matches, but the Rohit-led team finally prevailed, finishing the chase with 173 points in the last ball. “Winning the game is the most important thing. We’ve been hard at work since the first game. We had a camp in Mumbai and we feel good when we get the result (in our favor). The first win is always special,” said Rohit, who was named Man of the Match for his 45-65 goals in the post-match presentation.
Piyush Chawla snapped three wickets and Rohit, who introduced spinner Hrithik Shokin in the fourth over, praised the slow bowlers for doing their job.
“Recently we played a test match here, the field looked different. It was important to find a slow bowler in this field. The spinners kept us in the game.” The skipper from India said that his team, as a batting team, wanted to make the most of the powerplay.
“We had to hit well to catch up with the total. I thought everyone raised their hands. We had to make it important for the team. I needed to use the majority, I knew we had to keep attacking and take our chances,” he said. “I was trying to form a partnership, I had good communication with Tilak. It was important for us to have a good partnership.” For DC, that was their the fourth loss in so many matches is the second worst start to the season for them after six straight losses in 2013.
“Look at the last three IPL games, they are amazing. Wrong ending today but the guys were fantastic. Two balls were wrong and that’s the game.
After defending five rounds in the last over, Henrich Nortier took a death bowling masterclass to nearly win.
“Nortier is a world class player and that is what we expect from the big guy. Mustafiz too (excellent),” he said.
Warner said his team should avoid losing wickets in the heap.
“I think we have some positives from the last three games, but we shouldn’t lose wickets in the clumps.” DC posted 172 points, mostly due to Aksar Patel’s 25 54’s after being called into battle.
“Aksar should hit in the top four; he brought us to parity.”
