For sure, the Nintendo Switch isn’t a high-end gaming machine, but that doesn’t make the 15 best first-person shooter ports for it any less fun.
One of the most famous types of video games is the first-person shooter, which can be played on almost all consoles today. Fans have also shown their love for the Nintendo Switch, which is great for first-person shooter fans who want to play on the go. The site now has some well-known games offered.
Some are big AAA games that most gamers know, while others may have been surprise hits that no one knew about until now. But either way, players who want to play first-person action and have itchy trigger fingers will find plenty to do.
Screencheat: Unplugged
Screencheat is a first-person shooter Switch game made by Samurai Punk that’s best played with friends. All of the players’ figures can’t be seen in the game. To win, players have to look at the screen to see how the other players see things and figure out exactly where their enemies are.
The game came out on PC first in 2014, and then it was ported to the Switch in 2018. The Switch version had better images and an easier-to-use layout. Critics liked it a lot because it had fun gameplay and a lot of different game types.
Quake
Quake is a first-person arena shooter game made by the id Software company. It is seen as a direct successor to the famous game series Doom. When it first came out in 1996 for PC, it was updated and put out in 2021 for Switch.
You can play the game by yourself or with other people. On top of that, the updated version of the game has brand-new stories and more material. The old FPS game’s move to the Switch has been praised by reviewers for its classic gameplay, good multiplayer, and ample amount of material.
Crysis Remastered Trilogy
As you play the Crytek FPS game, you play as troops who use a special suit to fight foes. They can hide in their nanosuits, which also make them faster, stronger, and able to last longer. People who play Crysis also have to fight a lot of different enemies, such as North Korean forces stuck on Earth and aliens with very advanced technology.
The Crysis games were brought to the Switch and put together into a single game. The Switch wasn’t supposed to be able to play Crysis games because they were known to be too big for PCs when they came out. It worried gamers and reviewers. Thank goodness, playing Crysis on the Switch was a breeze.
Portal: Companion Collection
Portal is thought by many to be one of the best video games ever. People who play the famous game are not told to use real guns to shoot their targets. It uses a portal gun instead, which lets players solve complicated tasks.
There are no changes to how Portal is played on other devices, like the PC or the Switch. Portal is known for its difficult tasks, and now with the Switch port, players can solve them at 60 frames per second and with better images.
Payday 2
Payday 2 might not have the best score on the review site Metacritic, but it’s still worth playing. People liked how the first game put players in the role of a criminal bank robber so they could blow off some steam with fast-paced, violent first-person shooters.
It’s still great as a co-op game, and some might even say it’s the best first-person shooter game on the Switch. Critics took away points because it didn’t have all the content from the PC version. However, this is a good choice for people who want a simple first-person shooter with some funny parts and great gameplay techniques.
Bulletstorm: Duke Of Switch Edition
Bulletstorm isn’t so much about having a deep story as it is about executing and chaos. The game was made to be as crazy as possible, and it definitely lives up to that promise. It took a while, but the Duke of Switch version finally gave the game its own port.
You can play the whole story as the character Duke Nukem in this port of the game. This character hasn’t aged well with gamers over the years. In any case, it’s one of the better FPS games on the system and deserves a good run.
Void Bastards
People who liked the old first-person shooter XIII will enjoy Void Bastards a lot because it looks like a comic book. In fact, this game takes the comic book style a lot further, adding even text sound effects from the pages.
The story and unique art style go well together, even though the game doesn’t have a lot of sound effects. A lot of users haven’t heard of this game, but it’s been getting great reviews. The game plays really well on Switch, and not many games are like it.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein II is the eighth game in the popular series about William “BJ” Blazkowicz, the famous super-Nazi assassin. In this one, you fight Nazis in a different time period that looks a lot like Man in the High Castle. It’s still the same story in New Colossus, but this time the Third Reich wins the war and takes over America.
One of the best games of the eighth generation, The New Colossus, is praised for its captivating story and standard run-and-gun style. However, the Switch’s technology does make it a little less enjoyable to play. It’s both scary and fun at the same time.
Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is one of the best western shooters out there. It’s not meant to be as big as an open-world action game like Red Dead Redemption 2, mostly because of how its first-person shooter works. The game is mostly about motion and set pieces that go very high.
Upgrades and skills in the game make it more interesting by letting players change how the game is played. It takes some of the crazier parts of games like Borderlands to make the crazy, fun, and fast-paced gameplay even better.
Doom Eternal
It was first launched in March 2020 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. DOOM Eternal is the newest game in the series. After only nine months, it was made for the Nintendo Switch. The story picks up months after the events of the first game, when the monster hordes took over the whole world.
People love DOOM Eternal because it adds new features to the already great gameplay, like the harpoon hook and a dodge system, that let players change how they play. It’s also very fast, crazy, and heart-pounding, even more so than the first game.
Doom 3
DOOM 3 came out first for PC in 2004 and then for Xbox the next year. The game was made available on Switch in July 2019 to mark the 25th anniversary of the series. This is a new take on the famous id Software shooter, with a lot of scary features added instead of just shooting.
Tunnel Rush has since won many awards and enjoyed by many fans, but some people don’t like how it changed the way you play. But it’s easy to get scared when you play this one in the dark while hiding under the covers with your Switch.
Borderlands: Legendary Collection
Borderlands is a strange series of games. Even though every game is a financial hit, they have a huge following of dedicated fans that you usually only see for cult classics. Now that shooting for a new Borderlands movie is over, Switch owners should play the original games if they haven’t already.
Borderlands 1 and 2 are in the Legendary Collection, along with The Pre-Sequel. All of that material is more than enough to keep players busy for months, especially since the game(s) have so much loot, side quests, and challenges.
Doom (1993)
Almost every video game system out there has the classic DOOM game, even handhelds. It’s still a classic in the old gaming genre, and new players keep coming back to it thanks to a strong hacking community that has made some great mods and very powerful guns that bring DOOM up to date.
Doom helped shape the way first-person shooters are played today and started a new era of sci-fi/action games that people still like today. It’s the most important game that came before first-person shooters, so gamers who haven’t tried it yet are missing out on a great experience.
Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation is a hard game to put into a single category. It’s a first-person shooter with sneaking and travel features, making it a strange mix. The game isn’t so much about destroying enemies as it is about staying alive as an evil alien thing follows the player around everywhere.
Gamers take on the role of Ellen Ripley’s daughter, who finds out that the Nostromo’s flight log has been found and is being held on the Sevastopol space station. It fits wonderfully between the first and second movies in the sci-fi horror series, making it a great follow-up in many ways.
Superhot
When the indie game Superhot came out, it caused a lot of buzz. One big difference from most first-person shooters is that time slows down when the player isn’t moving. The idea of “bullet time” is taken to a whole new level, and players can now think about and plan their next move.
The simple art style is another thing that stands out about Superhot. There aren’t any clear features; just basic forms and three different colors. This choice was made to make sure that the background wouldn’t take away from the action that was already happening. It’s one of the strangest FPS games on Switch, but it’s also one of the coolest.
Bioshock: The Collection
All three of the award-winning Bioshock games were updated and launched for the Switch in May 2020. This was great news for both Bioshock fans and new players who had never been able to dive into this Steampunk-like world.
For people who like scary and exciting things, Bioshock and Bioshock 2’s underwater dystopia of Rapture was great to explore at night. There have been more than 15 years since the first Bioshock game came out, but the Bethesda title still plays well today. Between Bioshock 3 and Bioshock: Infinite, the creators have everything they need to make Bioshock 4, which should be a little different from the others.
Warframe
Warframe has been added to many machines over the years and has a huge community of players. This is a first-person shooter with an RPG theme, which makes it more difficult than the usual “shoot anything that moves” game. It also has some nice graphics that have held up pretty well over the years.
A lot of people don’t like free-to-play games because they have in-game purchases that make them money, but Warframe handles this better than most live service games. It’s up to the gamers to decide if they want to pay for changes or not.
Metro: 2033 & Metro: Last Light Redux
The Metro series follows the main character, Artyom, as he finds his way around Moscow’s destroyed subway system. Radiation, monsters who are hungry, and packs of humans who are still alive and fighting over a piece of the pie make the post-apocalyptic city very dangerous.
Critics have said that the game is a great first-person shooter with great controls, a scary story, and a truly engaging gameplay experience that pulls the player into the main story and keeps them hooked until the very end.
Overwatch
Overwatch, which is very famous, got a port for the Nintendo Switch called the Legendary Edition. This edition comes with the main game and a ton of great hero skins to get players started. It got a lot of praise for its team-based co-op, as well as for its great mood, images, and gameplay.
Overwatch on the Switch is better than I thought it would be, and there’s a lot to see, do, and unlock. You can also play this first-person shooter game while you’re on the go, which is helpful for staying in touch with online friends who like to play often.
