Shubman Gill was the top scorer for the Gujarat Titans as the Hardik Pandya-led franchise defeated the Punjab Kings in a thrilling 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Thursday. Although Gill scored the most runs of any batter in the match, former Indian batter Virender Sehwag was not impressed with the first batter’s approach of the game. It wasn’t until after Gill had hit half a century that he decided to speed up, and Sehwag was unhappy that the star slugger was taking such a selfish approach.
In a chat on Cricbuzz, Sehwag warned Gill not to let his personal ambitions exceed those of the team, as such an approach could cost Gujarat the match.
“He scored 67 out of 49 goals, but when did he reach his fifty? He reached his fifties with maybe 41-42 balls, so in 7-8 balls he scored 17 more runs. The acceleration came there when he reached his fifties. Even if that didn’t happen, then GT in the last over would have been chasing maybe 17 instead of 7,” Sehwag said.
Sehwag, who was once one of the most formidable sluggers in the game, said he would get a slap in the face from cricket if he focused on personal achievement rather than the team.
“You can’t think let me score fifty and we’ll still win the match. This is cricket. The moment you think about your performance (not your team), tappad padta high cricket se (you will get a hard slap from cricket). You can’t think like that. If he had shown the same intent and played close to 200 when he was in his fifties, he could have reached his milestone much sooner and saved more supplies for his team,” Sehwag said.
Gill’s 67 out of 49 helped Gujarat reach their 154-run goal. But despite it being a mediocre result, GT had to wait until the penultimate ball of the over to complete the chase against PBKS.
Even Titans skipper Hardik Pandya said he didn’t want these close games and would rather have his batters hit faster in the middle over.
