Vijaykumar Vyshak in action for RCB at IPL 2023© BCCI
Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 got a new hero on Saturday and his name is Vijaykumar Vishak. The 26-year-old fast bowler from Karnataka became the star of Royal Challengers Bangalore, taking three wickets to lead his team to victory over the Delhi Capitals at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The cricketer was transferred to the team as a replacement for the injured Rajat Patidar after a brilliant performance at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He took 38 wickets in 10 first class matches and in T20 cricket he ended up taking 22 wickets in 14 games.
Vyshak, who won an impressive 3-of-20 against the Delhi Capitals on his IPL debut on Saturday, was apprehensive about bowling but gained confidence after team management told him to “express himself.”
The 26-year-old deftly mixed his lengths, varied his pace, and pitched the perfect vertical-seam ball to catch DC’s batters by surprise.
“I wasn’t ready to pitch the knuckleball, but Faf came over and told me again, ‘Maybe you can go slower,’ so I thought I’d do it and got the wicket,” Wyshak said at the awards ceremony. after a 23-time RCB win.
“This is very important because the management told me to go and express myself, so I think I did it and I am very happy with the performance.
“Faf came and told me that the wicket was holding a little, so I maintained my strength and filed my slower wickets a little and I think that helped me.” Wyshak hit a slower ball to get his first wicket in David Warner uniform and his knuckleball hit Aksar Patel.
“I’ve been working on this for two years, so I think it’s finally paid off.” A clean bowler from the start, Vyshak was not auctioned by the IPL and RCB chose him to replace injured slugger Rajat Patidar.
“I have been waiting for this opportunity for a very long time. I worked hard, so I think it paid off.”
