Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was taken aback by the referees’ decision to change the ball himself due to dew in an IPL match against Chennai Super Kings and called for consistency in such decisions. Heavy dew at MA Chidambaram stadium on Wednesday evening forced the referees to intervene and change the ball during the chase, leaving Ashwin, who returned the numbers 2/25, to be “surprised”.
The Royals beat the four-time IPL champions by three runs in a last-ball thriller, with CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja failing to score 21 runs after the last over in their 176-win rush.
Ashwin said he had never seen the referees change the ball before due to heavy dew.
“I am very surprised that the referees themselves changed the ball to dew. This has never happened before and I am very surprised. To be honest, some of the on-field decisions in this year’s IPL left me confused.” — said the Indian defender at the post-match press conference.
“I mean, (it) baffled me in a good way or a bad way. It’s because I think you need some balance,” said Ashwin, who was named Man of the Match.
“As a bowling team, we don’t ask for the ball to be changed. But the ball was changed with the consent of the referee. I asked the referee and he said we could replace him.
“So I just hope that every time dew comes out they can change it every time moving forward in this IPL so you can do whatever you want but you just have to be standard going forward,” added He.
The Royals spinner said he loves the way he bowls and looks forward to tricking batters even more with his flights.
“I just enjoy bowling and I don’t think too much about it. For someone like me who plays in different phases of the game, I have to be prepared to serve the ball with different lengths, different speeds and different trajectories.
“So, I think I understood that even Sanjay (Manjrekar) asked me, “Are you making it much easier?” I feel like you only keep things simple when you achieve a certain mastery of things. I guess I probably value things and do what I think is best for the situation.
“So, as far as I’m concerned, at the moment I’m just really enjoying my bowling and I’m more looking at tricking a batsman in flight. It’s because of where I am in bowling,” Ashwin added.
Of his bowling in Wednesday’s game, especially the sacking of Shivam Dube, Ashwin said: “He (Dube) is a designated CSK player. to me.
Ashwin fired Dube in eight runs, long before the power hitter could calm down.
“I didn’t have any set plans, but I feel like the ball comes out very well, I can make it fall, I can put in enough turns, I can use both of my options, my length and the armball is really good at the moment. I’m just happy with how it’s coming out,” he added.
Ashwin, who was promoted in the order after the Royals quickly lost a couple of wickets, said the pitch offered a turn and they had to bide their time as performance dwindled from a fast start before the team finished 175-of-8-of-20. overs
“I felt like I was playing a test match when he (Jadey) was bowling. It’s just a few balls raging, it’s something we’re going to face different teams at different home courts.
“I just felt like it was perfect for a left-handed player to hit that spot on a side spin, good speed. Jadeya was unplayable for those 2-3 overs, with the ball spinning occasionally due to the stump of the outside leg. and try to select our matches,” added Ashwin.
