Of all the top stars that make up the Indian cricket team in the World Test Championship final, one batter who will be closely watched will be Shubman Gill. Last year was a stellar time for the dashing rookie. Whether it’s Tests, ODIs, T20Is or even the recently concluded IPL, Gill has proven himself to be the next big player in world cricket. Naturally, expectations are high for the 23-year-old as the WTC Final draws closer. This time around, India will face Pat Cummins’ Australia to try and end a decade long ICC title drought. However, before the final, the great Australian and former India coach Greg Chappell pointed out several points that could cause problems for Gill.
“I saw him a little. I saw him in Australia. The one thing that India excelled at, like every other team in world cricket, is that their developing players played a lot of cricket. they played a lot of cricket abroad. So Shubman played a lot of cricket,” Gregg Chappell told Backstage With Boria.
“He has been in England before. He will fight like any other player in English conditions if the Aussies play well. Bowlers that will bother him are mostly those with extra pace like Mitchell Stark. Extra pace brings out good players. a bit of a rebound also brings out good players and I think if Hazlewood is able to play he could be a problem for Schubman. good line. He has bowls of very good length can be in english conditions.
“I don’t want to go into details, but I’m sure Australians must have seen a couple of things that I’ve seen. length around the stump and if the ball bounces a little more I think it will be susceptible to being hit over the wicket. This will be the area that the Australians will focus on. But he is a very good player. If they don’t make a good bowl, he will punish them.”
This is the second final of the World Testing Championship in India. India lost to New Zealand in the 2021 final.
