Former Indian cricket team rookie Aakash Chopra was unimpressed with Andre Russell’s performance for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Russell got off to a good start in the first match against the Punjab Kings but in the next two he didn’t manage to score much in games as Rashid Khan dismissed him cheaply in the last match against the Gujarat Titans. Ahead of KKR’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chopra said players like Rinku Singh and skipper Nitish Rana have stepped up, but Russell’s form remains a major issue for the Kolkata team.
“Calcutta is a team on a roll. They seem to be in trouble. Andre Russell’s bat still didn’t speak at all. It looks like something is missing in baseball, but one day Rinku Singh comes, another day Venkatesh Iyer comes, and now Nitish Rana has also scored,” Chopra said.
Both Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer found their form against GT in the last game when Rinku stunned everyone with five sixes for five balls to score a sensational win for the team.
Chopra praised batting in general and tried to guess how they would line up against SRH.
“Venki Ayer hit well, had a very good two games. His punch order has been moved up and down a bit. He can keep hitting in 3rd, he can open up or he can be moved to 4th. If Russell scores, the status of the team will suddenly rise even more, ”he added.
