It’s not often that we see the highest scoring batter in a match in the line of fire. Gujarat Titans rookie Shubman Gill scored 67 runs from 49 balls, playing a big part in the team’s 154 run goal against the Punjab Kings. However, despite chasing a mediocre finish and getting off to a start like Gujarat’s, few expected the game to go all the way to the end. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, dissatisfied with Shubman Gill’s performance, advised him to learn from M.S. Dhoni if he wants to stay to the end and finish the chase.
“The conclusion from this game is that if the batter is set up, he should try to finish the game in 18th or 19th place. If you go all the way, show temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t come out “You can ask Shubman Gill how the game came to the 20th finish. Sai Sudharsan scored about 100 goals. David Miller was pretty quiet too,” said Manjrekar in chat on ESPNCricinfo.
While it’s undeniable that Gill could have played better in the mid-over, Manjrekar also claims he’s quite young, unlike mascots like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
“Let’s not forget that he is very young. But because he has such amazing abilities, we expect a lot from him. M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli have a lot of death over experience. Kohli knows how to stay to the end and finish Dhoni has spent his entire life hitting deadly balls,” added Manjrekar.
“Gill doesn’t have much of a chance just yet. But he is a potentially great player and knows that the remaining 70 unwinnable matches would further elevate his status,” he said further.
After the match, even Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya said that he would rather have his team show more attacking intent in the middle of the over than leave it until the 20th over to end the chase.
