Shubman Gill’s stunning display of form, for both the Indian team and his Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans, rocked the cricket world. Peers, former cricketers and several great players run out of adjectives to praise a newcomer. While some believe that he will be the next big player, others believe that the first batter has already become a superstar. Amid the hype surrounding Gill, former Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram questioned the Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release the batter.
The Knights Riders have decided to keep the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarty ahead of the IPL mega auction 2022, missing out on ‘prince’ Shubman Gill.
This decision baffled many then, and is even more baffling today, as Gill generally took his game to the next level.
“His fundamentals are right,” Akram said in a Sportskeeda chat about Gill’s performances. “I don’t know how his previous team (Kolkata Knight Riders) released him without realizing his potential.”
Akram is not only convinced of Gill’s potential as a batter, but he also feels that he is the type of player who could lead his franchise and the Indian national team in the future.
“Not realizing that he could become a future captain. Not only in the cricket franchise, but eventually in India as well. They didn’t realize that this guy could win their tournaments, not just games,” said the legendary pacer.
Gill has worked hard to become the hitter he is today. The young slugger ended the 2023 IPL campaign with 890 runs in 17 matches, averaging 59.33 and hitting a brilliant 157.80. The 23-year-old also batted three centuries and four half-centuries in the course of the tournament.
