Young Shubman Gill had a dreamy performance at IPL 2023 when the Gujarat Titans opener hit 890 runs in 17 games to win the orange cap. His score also included three turbulent centuries that made him the talk of the town. Many have begun to see the 23-year-old as the future of Indian cricket due to his variety of shots. Debuting internationally in 2020, Gill has already earned a century across all three game formats, leading fans to compare him to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
However, former India coach Gary Kirsten praised Gill, but also called the comparison “unfair” as he was a young slugger early in his career.
“He is a young player with incredible skill and determination to become one of the best players in the world. It would be unfair to compare him to Sachin and Virat so early on in his journey,” Kirsten told Cricbuzz.
“I believe he has the game to play successfully in all three formats for India. You don’t see that often these days, especially when T20 cricket is evolving and progressing so fast,” he added.
Following a successful performance in IPL 2023, Gill will now feature again for India in the World Testing Championship final against Australia at The Oval on 7 June. Speaking about Gill’s form in the WTC, Gary expressed his faith in him and stated that he was confident in his actions.
“Shubman has all the ingredients to be a great player for India in all formats. Like any player, trials and obstacles await him; how he handles them and continues to progress will ultimately determine his long-term success. I would advise him to continue to study and communicate with those who can give him reliable advice, ”said Kirsten.
