‘Lack of talent’: Sunil Gavaskar unhappy with players with no caps at IPL 2023

The current Indian Premier League (IPL) season has witnessed an exciting struggle. From Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Rinku Singh’s five sixes in the final to Sai Sudarshan’s ascension with a bat for the defending champions, the tournament has witnessed outstanding performances from Indian players with no limits. However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes the 2023 IPL fell short of the hype, saying he hasn’t seen any interesting young talent in the first few weeks of the season so far.

Gavascar said he sees a lack of interesting young talent across all departments, adding that he doesn’t expect that to change.

“…unless there are some hidden gems yet to be found, the fast bowling, kick-off and spin bowling sections seem to be devoid of any exciting talent,” Sunil Gavaskar was quoted by the Indian Express in his Sportsstar column.

Despite being sympathetic towards bowlers due to the nature of T20 cricket, Gavascar said the lack of match planning made things worse for them.

“The bowling department also seems to be lacking in talent. While it’s understandable that the T20 format is very harsh on bowlers, the lack of careful planning and thought when a batter gets stuck in them is worrisome. Spinners almost never change the speed at which they serve the ball, and when bowling they seem to be at an average pace, which is exactly what hitters are looking for, ”he added.
