Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag recently revealed how legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar treated him to sushi for the first time. Both players are regarded as one of the best starting pairings for the Indian national team, who also had great off-pitch communication. Sehwag stated that it was during an Indian tour of Australia in 2003–2004 when Tendulkar invited him to dinner at a Japanese restaurant and treated him to sushi, a dish the 44-year-old batter had no idea about at the time.
Sehwag shared that he was expecting Indian food like dal (lentils) and roti (chapati) but had to try sushi, which he didn’t like at all. He revealed that he had to order burgers and sandwiches after returning to the team hotel.
“He (Sachin Tendulkar) took me with him when we were in Australia in 2003-2004 and said we would have sushi. I asked: “What kind of sushi is this?”. He told me that we were going to a Japanese restaurant. asked what the food would be. He said everything would be there. I was expecting dal and roti and all that,” said the former batter at Breakfast with Champions.
“He held his head and told me to move on and try different products,” he added. “That’s when I learned about sushi. I said, “He made me eat raw rice.” We came back and then I ordered sandwiches and burgers from the hotel,” he added.
Speaking about his lifestyle, the former rookie said that his mother was a vegetarian, which resulted in him having to eat only vegetarian food in his early years. However, his father ate chicken every day, but he did not have the courage to ask him for a piece.
“Both my mother and wife are vegetarians. I have had vegetarian food at home since childhood,” he added. “My father would order chicken from the street and eat it every day. We never ate it. We didn’t have the courage to ask for a piece. left town to play cricket,” Sehwag said.
