England captain Ben Stokes believes he played “the role of John Terry” in his team’s IPL CSK victory this season. Stock referenced Chelsea legend John Terry, who famously lifted the Champions League trophy in 2012 wearing a Chelsea kit despite missing the final against Bayern Munich by suspension. Stokes discussed his role in his team’s IPL victory during a press conference at Lord’s. He said, “I did a bit of the role of John Terry winning the IPL.” Stokes joined the CSK franchise for INR 16.25 crore but only played two matches due to a toe injury. Stokes last appeared in April against the Lucknow Super Giants.
He returned to the UK and watched his team’s inspiring victory over the Gujarat Titans on his phone in the bar at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington.
The English team stayed at the hotel for their one-off match against Ireland. Stokes limited his bowling between Tests as he believes he has a finite number of overs left in his career.
“Before, I didn’t have to worry about it, I could just go bowling and then hit the plates and come out pretty fresh. something right.” Stokes’ words are quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
“The thing is, I don’t have to bowl a lot to keep the rest of my body working. I can have quite a lot of free time and then ramp up pretty quickly. It’s not doom and gloom if I do or don’t beat in this game.”
Stokes noted that his injury and return from the IPL gave him time to focus on training camp. “I think I would have preferred to play, then I saw it as an opportunity to train rather than play and then improve my skills as the tournament progressed.”
“When you get to a tournament, it’s like playing and traveling and all that. So I was really able to turn a frustrating situation into a positive one because I was able to focus on training properly, whether it was technical stuff with the bat or fitness, going to the gym and being able to focus on something else.” Stokes added.
