With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 completed and cleaned up, the focus is now shifting towards the longest playing format as India play Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Since K.L. Rahul is injured, the responsibility will lie with Shubman Gill, who will be Rohit Sharma’s teammate at the top of the order. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting thinks Gill has a bit of class and swagger in his shots, adding that the 23-year-old will play a major role in the WTC Finals.
“He looks like an amazing young guy. He also has a relationship with himself. He is a little arrogant. He has a serious class. the shot he will probably need against this Australian attack,” Ponting told ICC Review.
Gill was in amazing form during the 2023 IPL, winning the Orange Cap. However, he failed to lead the defending champions Gujarat Titans to a second consecutive title, but he is looking to win his first major trophy in the colors of India next week.
Ponting also welcomed India’s Mohammed Shami, stating that an experienced pacer can be dangerous, something the Australians have already acknowledged.
“I think he needs to step up or try to take his game to the next level if India is going to win this game. When you talk to Australian batters, they understand how good Shami is, whether it’s a new ball or an old ball. be it in Australia or India. They know what skills he has and how dangerous he can be. It has to be him,” he added.
The WTC Final will take place at the Oval in London from June 7th to 11th.
