The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the perfect breeding ground for cricket talent in India. Over the years, many players have come in, made a name for themselves in the T20 league, and made their international debuts. The new rising star knocking on the door of the national team is Kolkata Knight Riders wagon Rinku Singh. With his Five Sixes feat against the Gujarat Titans, Rinku creates a buzz for the national selection. But the amazing fact is that it hasn’t even debuted in India yet.
India A is a platform that gives promising players the opportunity to showcase their skills and learn how to play for different international teams around the world. Rincu, who has shown his potential in the IPL over the past two years, has yet to play for the India A team.
While it is undeniable that the competition for places in Indian cricket is very high, it does not seem that Rinku has never had the opportunity to take a place in the Indian national team. In fact, back in 2019, Rinku was selected for the India A squad to play Sri Lanka A in an unofficial test series.
However, Rinku’s joy did not last long as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the player from the T20 tournament overseas without prior authorization.
Uttar Pradesh native Rinku raced for Deccan Gladiators in the Ramadan T20 Cup in Abu Dhabi, scoring 361 runs at an average of 51.57 and 176 strikes, according to Wisden. Although he was one of the best players in the league while playing for the franchise, he broke a BCCI rule which resulted in his suspension.
A BCCI statement at the time said: “Rinku Singh has been suspended with immediate effect for three months effective June 1, 2019. game against Sri Lanka “A”, which will start on May 31, 2019. BCCI will not tolerate such violations in the future and if a player is found to be in violation of BCCI rules and regulations, strict action will be taken.
However, Rinku learned his lesson and dedicated himself to Indian competition to avoid such a scenario from happening again.
With 40 first-class games under his belt and heroism in the Indian Premier League, Rinku has certainly given a big boost to his ambitions in India.
