England head coach Brandon McCallum’s appearance in an online betting ad has landed him in a quandary with the country’s Cricket Board (ECB), which is investigating whether it violates the governing body’s anti-corruption rules. The former New Zealand captain has appeared in online ads after joining betting company 22Bet as an ambassador in January. On March 27, he shared a video on his Facebook page promoting 22Bet markets in the Indian Premier League.
“We are looking into this matter and are discussing with Brandon his relationship with 22Bet,” the ECB quoted the BBC as saying.
“We have rules regarding gambling and we will always strive to enforce them.” However, the ECB clarified that McCallum was not currently under investigation.
Last week, the New Zealand Troubled Gambling Foundation complained to the ECB about the ad.
According to the ECB’s anti-discrimination code, “directly or indirectly soliciting, inciting, luring, instructing, persuading, encouraging, facilitating or allowing any other party to bet on the outcome, course, conduct or any other aspect of any match.” or competition” is an offense.
The Code suggests that such an offense entails at least one year of “disqualification”.
England have won 10 of the last 12 Tests since McCallum took over at the start of last summer.
