Chennai Super Kings showed their mettle and defeated the Gujarat Titans in a thrilling IPL 2023 final on Monday to claim their fifth title. Chasing a revised target of 171 in 15 overs (DLS method), Ravindra Jadeha held his nerve and broke the boundary with the last ball and led CSK to win by 5 wickets. With this win, CSK equaled the Mumbai Indians’ record for most titles. As both teams have won five titles each, the comparison between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma is becoming more and more clear.
However, the former Pakistani skipper dismissed any such comparison and stated that there is a huge difference between both players, especially in terms of fitness where Rohit falls behind.
“There is a huge difference between them. Rohit Sharma has a big title, he is the captain of the Indian team. He must lead by example in all aspects, and fitness is a very important aspect. As a captain, when you are able to demand something from your teammates, you must have it yourself. You have to come first,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.
“When you look at Rohit Sharma, you realize that fitness is one aspect where he can be much better. This will improve his hitting and self-confidence. But we’ve been talking about this for a long time. I don’t know why it doesn’t fit well enough. Maybe he knows the reason himself,” he added.
Going into the final match, B Sai Sudharsan scored 96 out of 47 goals and the Gujarat Titans put in 214 out of four after being asked to bat first.
Setting a revised target of 171 in 15 overs after rain interrupted play early in the second inning of the final, which was rescheduled for a reserve day due to heavy rain, CSK completed the target in what could have been Dhoni’s last T20 league appearance.
Ravindra Jadeja scored Mohit Sharma’s six and four in the last two to win it for CSK, and even as the yellow jerseys ran onto the field, Dhoni remained in the dugout with his eyes closed.
Neither the relentless might of the titans of Gujarat nor two days of bad weather could stop Dhoni’s men from equaling their archrivals, the Mumbai Indians, in terms of most IPL trophy wins.
