Cricket Australia has unveiled its World Test Championship (WTC) team of just three Indians. Babar Azam was on the list, not Indian star Virat Kohli, while future superstar Shubman Gill failed to fill the spot. The spinning duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja was the slow bowling choice of choice, while Rishabh Pant was chosen as wicket-keeper given his heroism against Australia. While Pant has been ruled out with injuries, Jadeja and Ashwin are in contention to play for India in the WTC final against Australia at the Oval.
The team had Usman Khawaja and Sri Lankan slugger Dimut Karunaratne as their first partnership with 3rd placed Babar Azam. Babar had stellar numbers between 2021 and 2023 with over 1,500 runs in 14 games. While Joe Root was the top scorer with 1915 runs in 22 matches and even Pujara had good hits, the Pakistan cricket team captain was favored in this position.
However, Ruth found a spot on the team at number 4, followed by the explosive Travis Head of Australia. Head was instrumental in Australia’s success and his aggressive style of play brought much-needed variety to their attack.
Pant, Jadeja and Ashwin complete the wicket-kicking and bowler-spinning quota on the sidelines.
In terms of fast bowlers, Pat Cummins has been selected as skipper, with England veteran James Anderson and South African star Kagiso Rabada joining his all-star line-up.
