Australia expects Ravindra Jadeja to play XI in the World Testing Championship final but is unsure about Ravicandran Ashwin’s participation in the privateer competition to be played at The Oval starting June 7th. India used three spinners during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. both Ashwin (25 wickets) and Jadeya (22) shine brightly as they help their team to a 2-1 series win.
Speaking to local media ahead of Team Australia’s practice at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham on Thursday, assistant coach Daniel Vettori said the team’s management had been talking a lot about a possible Indian attack on the bowling alley.
“We discussed it,” Vettori said.
“I think Jadeha will play because of the way he hits the ball and how successful he was in sixth position.
“Then the question will be around this fourth zakat and generalist in (Shardul) Thakur and Ashwin, but they (both) are pretty good choices.” Vettori, however, believes that Ashwin could simply lose a place in the playing squad due to the combination of teams, despite having a decent record in England.
The seasoned offspinner has a total of 18 wickets with a 28.11 average in seven matches in England, but has played only one Test at the Oval.
“Ashwin is an incredible bowler and he will be the first pick on most teams and it’s only with their combinations that it could see him miss out on selection,” Vettori said.
“We expect the Oval to behave as it has always done.
“It’s a good wicket, but it has a lot to offer spinners as the game progresses.” Vettori also expects Cameron Green to play a big part in the WTC Finals, especially after his excellent performance in the just concluded IPL.
“Any cricket now is a preparation. He’s running in the background to make sure his bowling loads are in order and he’s really ready for the test cricket,” Vettori said of the green.
“We look at it like you’re in high-end, high-intensity cricket, we’re happy with that because it means you’re playing cricket.
“The hardest thing for guys is to come out of nothing, and that can be a problem for a couple of guys who have had a long break and how they pick up speed as quickly as possible,” he said.
“As far as Cameron is concerned, I think he has played so much cricket that he will be fine. It’s good that he’s back. successful IPL.”
