After reports emerged on Friday that Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners had received an offer from Saudi Arabia to create the country’s “world’s richest T20 league”, a new report cited an anonymous BCCI official, cricketers will not be admitted to any of these leagues. Currently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prohibits Indian players from participating in overseas leagues. However, the Saudi Arabian government’s proposal for a new T20 league there could see India’s board of directors change their stance on the issue.
According to The Age, negotiations on this matter have been going on for about a year. But before anything significant happens, the league must be sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Not too long ago, ICC Chairman Greg Barclay confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest in cricket.
“If you look at the other sports they played, I think cricket will be attractive to them,” he said. “Given their advancement in the sport in general, cricket would be a good fit for Saudi Arabia.”
However, a report by The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official as saying that none of India’s top cricketers would take part in any of the leagues. However, the franchise’s participation cannot be stopped, the official said.
“None of the current Indian players will be playing in any of the leagues, but as far as franchise participation is concerned, we cannot stop them,” a senior BCCI official told The Indian Express. “It’s their personal decision. We’ve seen IPL franchises go to South Africa or Dubai and we can’t say no. It’s their choice to have their team play in any of the world’s leagues.”
