In Skyrim, you can live in a lot of different player houses. Take a look at some of the best.
Skyrim is famous for its dungeons and tunnels, but every Dragonborn needs a place to unwind. You can buy some kind of player home in almost every hold in Skyrim. These homes let you craft, show off your loot, and take a nap after a long day of exploring.
After taking into account mods, this list ranks each major player house in Skyrim to help you choose the right one for you. From creepy buildings to swampy land, these are the player homes that every Skyrim adventurer needs to have.
The Companion Quarters
After joining the Companions group, you can go to the Companion Quarters. Being a Companion is free, and they have their own questline, so it’s a good idea to join them for both a home and a job.
After leaving Helgen, the Companion Quarters is one of the easiest player homes to get because you can quickly join the Companions by going to Whiterun and entering Jorrvaskr. However, the Companion Quarters is not a castle, but it does have a warm bed for your character to rest in.
The Apprentice’s Quarters
The Apprentice’s Quarters is a small home that you can get into by entering The College Of Winterhold, just like the Companion Quarters. To join this group, all you have to do is go to Winterhold and show off your magical skills at the door.
Another easy home to get in Skyrim is the Apprentice’s Quarters, which doesn’t cost any cash. The Apprentice’s Quarters are also in The College Of Winterhold, so you can use them while you finish the quests in this area.
The Abandoned Shack
The Abandoned Shack is the first place you see when Astrid brings you there at the start of The Dark Brotherhood questline. The Abandoned Shack is not yours, but you can use the bed inside, and after Astrid leaves, you are the only person who can go there. The crates inside the Abandoned Shack, on the other hand, are not safe to leave things in because they can respawn.
The Abandoned Shack is an easy-to-get creepy house in the middle of a swamp that makes a great player home. But it’s not Skyrim’s most interesting home.
Alvor And Sigrid’s House
If you follow Hadvar into Helgen during the Unbound quest, you can get to Alvor and Sigrid’s house when you get to Riverwood. Someone will give you the key to their house and let you sleep in one of the beds there.
One of the homes you can use right away after leaving Helgen is Alvor and Sigrid’s House. This makes it a great choice if you need a place to sleep briefly or even in the later stages of Skyrim. You can also cook food in this house because it has a pot.
Hod And Gerdur’s House
You can only use Hod and Gerdur’s House as a player home if you follow Rolaf on the Unbound quest. It’s the same as Alvor and Sigrid’s House. There is a bed to sleep in and a cooking pot at Hod and Gerdur’s House.
Hod and Gerdur’s House is easier to get than other player homes that cost a lot of gold to buy because you can get to it after going to Riverwood.
Anise’s Cabin
Do not cry for Anise. Just think about how angry someone would get if you found a letter linking them to witchcraft while you were looking around in their root cellar. As long as you’re not yet a Thane, you can use her house just west of Riverwood as your own player house after dispatching her in self-defense.
At the start of the game, none of the Dragonborn are Thanes, so this is a great place to start. It also has a lot of useful things, like a veggie garden, an alchemy lab, and an enchanting table. Because there is no door, you may have to deal with an unwanted guest now and then. However, the area is generally pretty quiet.
Vlindrel Hall
The house Vlindrel Hall is in the city of Markarth. You can buy it if you are friendly with the Jarl of the Reach. Every building in Markarth is made of stone, including this house. One good thing about this house is that you can put both a chemistry table and an enchantment table in it.
You can buy Vlindrel Hall for 8,000 gold, but it will cost between 3,900 and 4,200 gold to add all the furniture that is offered. You should think about buying this house if you like the look of rocks.
Breezehome
Breezehome deserves to be there because it is so easy to get. It’s easy to get early in the game; just complete the main quest and then buy it from Whiterun for 5,000 gold. It will cost you 1,800 gold more to fully improve it with an alchemy lab and other changes, or you can just store cheese there.
Breezehome is small, but it’s still big enough for a Dragonborn family of four. Plus, it’s right next to Whiterun’s market, which makes up for its small size. If for nothing else, you don’t want to miss out on Breezehome because it’s so easy to move into.
Drelas’ Cottage
This house might be great for you if you want to get away and relax. Don’t worry about the fact that someone else owns this house; it’s perfect for you. Drelas lives here. He is a Dwemer Mage who is good at Dark Magic, and you’ll probably see him coming before you even see the house.
He hit you first, so you’re not to blame. You can move into his house after he dies. It has a veggie garden, a chicken coop, and a fully stocked alchemy lab, as well as a beautiful view and a quiet location. If you’re not the Thane of any hold, this can become a real player house. If you’re not happy with Breezehome or don’t have the money to buy it, Drelas’ Cabin is a good first choice if you want something fancier than Anise’s Cabin.
Hjerim
And Windhelm’s player home is Hjerim. You can buy it from the city before you even figure out who eliminated the butchers here. This house used to belong to a murderous butcher. Because of this, many people didn’t want to buy it, and it lost its value.
This big house is only 12,000 gold, but everything you need to fill it will cost another 21,000 gold. You might want to put some furniture in this house to get rid of the horrible smell.
The White Phial
You may be thinking about what to do with your life after adventures. You’re not happy just sitting back and looking at your gold or treasures. Why not start a stable business and make a regular income? The White Phial is an alchemy shop in Windhelm. It has been successful for years thanks to its convenient position and steady stream of customers.
The old owner dies when you finish the quest with the same name, and his helper Quintus Navale takes over as shop owner. He also becomes a single man again, and if you marry him, the White Phial is yours too. Put on the Amulet of Mara to get into Windhelm’s most well-known alchemist’s shop.
Severin Manor
It can be found in the Dragonborn DLC in the town of Raven Rock. After you finish the “Served Cold” quest, you can get this house for free. There is a lot of stuff inside this house, which is a big plus. To show off your weapons and gear, there are many places to do so. However, since this house is on Solstheim, you will rarely see them.
At least you can get Severin Manor without paying any gold, even though it looks a lot like every other house in Raven Rock. The only thing that makes it stand out is its large collection of furniture. Every explorer in Solstheim should have a place to hang their chest plate, and Severin Manor is a great option.
Honeyside
Honeyside is a wooden house in the far northwest of Riften. It looks cute and old-fashioned, which is sure to make anyone who loves old houses fall in love with it right away.
You can buy Honeyside from the city of Riften for 8,000 gold. When you’re done furnishing it, the whole thing will cost you 12,300 gold. If you are a Dragonborn and want a nice-looking home in Skyrim, this is one of the best ones. Also, if you buy this house, you won’t have to drive to the Thieves Guild.
Castle Volkihar
Once you finish the Dawnguard questline with the vampire group, Castle Volkihar can be used as your home. The house is yours after you eliminate Harkon, and you can use it as a player home. On the other hand, you can use it if you want to join the vampire group.
A vampire lord would love living in Castle Volkihar because it has everything they could want. There is a room for feeding vampires, rooms for sleeping, and even storage space. This house has one bad thing: your in-game family can’t move in. It’s one of the best places for players to live in Skyrim because it’s so big and has a unique look. Besides that, everyone wants their own home.
Windstad Manor
Once you’re friendly with the Jarl of the hold in Hjaalmarch, you can buy a piece of land called Windstad Manor. It is one of the three Hearthfire DLC plots that can be bought. As with all Hearthfire homes, Windstad Manor has a unique fish farm, and you can make it your dream home by adding rooms that you can change.
Every Argonian will want to live in Windstad Manor because it is right next to a pond where you can swim. This piece of land is a must-buy for only 5,000 gold.
Dawnstar Sanctuary
You might want to get rich and stay hidden, but you also don’t want to be alone. Inside the Dawnstar Sanctuary, there are a lot of unique features, and you’ll enjoy the small details that make it look even scarier.
As soon as you finish the Dark Brotherhood questline, which includes finding and fixing up the old Dawnstar Sanctuary again, you can make it your permanent home. To fully improve the area costs almost 20,000 gold.
Heljarchen Hall
In the Hearthfire DLC, you can turn Heljarchin Hall into a house by building on it. This piece of land is in the Pale. The front yard looks out over a large area of grassy fields, and directly behind it is a frozen, snowy tundra. After a long day of exploring, Heljarchen Hall gives you a lovely view of the area to enjoy when you get back home.
You can add many different rooms to Heljarchen Hall to make it better, and you can change how they look to suit your needs. Once you build this house, your family in Drive Mad can move in.
Proudspire Manor
The city of Solitude is where you can find the beautiful Proudspire Manor. It costs 25,000 gold, which is more than any other player home in the game, and you need another 11,000 gold to buy all the items for it.
After you finish quests in Solitude and become friendly with the Queen, you can buy Proudspire Manor. If you’re an explorer with a lot of money, Proudspire Manor is the place for you. The Proudspire Manor should be in a prominent place because of its lovely design and big size.
Lakeview Manor
That is the calmest house in Skyrim. It’s called Lakeview Manor. People say that this piece of land deep in the woods of Falkreath is a hunter’s dream. This land can be used to build a private bee farm, and you can make any changes you want to the house. Like all the other homes in the Hearthfire DLC. Once you’re friends with the Jarl of Falkreach, you can buy Lakeview Manor for 5,000 gold.
Just being in a quiet place like Lakeview Manor is enough to earn it a high spot. This land is perfect for anyone who wants to live in the middle of nowhere.
Arch-Mage’s Quarters
Even though it’s not in the best place, the inside is hard to pass up, and we’re not just talking about the beautiful view or how easy it is to get to the College of Winterhold.
After finishing the College of Winterhold questline and getting the title of Arch-Mage, this medieval luxury condo will be your home. You can use the indoor arboretum, different storage spaces, weapons, armor, magical books, and other valuable items that are appropriate for a resident Arch-Mage. One problem is that your partner can’t live here, but sometimes everyone needs their own space.
