The double-bladed lightsaber also called a Saberstaff, staff combat, Doublesaber, Lightstaff, Dualsaber, or Sith lightsaber, was a specialized type of lightsaber, which consisted of a single hilt with a beam emitter at both ends. The dual blades made wielding the weapon much like a conventional quarterstaff.
The Dark Lords first made up the lightsaber that was double-bladed. However, several weapons of its design later came into the possession of the Sith’s ancient adversary, the Jedi.
The original double-bladed lightsabers devised by the original Dark Lords of the Sith Empire were a complicated design, consisting of a single lightsaber mechanism with two sets of emitter on both ends of the hilt. One of the best examples of the weapon was the lightsaber of Exar Kun, which was changed from a standard lightsaber after Kun procured the schematics from a Sith Holocron.
The double saber design of staff saber was simplified in later years, retaining a single mechanism, but featuring an enlarged hilt. Whether this was an intentional design change or just the result of contemporary manufacturers being unable to replicate the original mechanism is unknown. But most saber staff designs were extremely simplistic, including two separate lightsabers with connected pommels, instead of a single mechanism. This design, while less complicated, also resulted in a significantly lengthened handle compared to the original design, which had two saber blades emitted from a standard-length hilt.
The primary purpose of the double-bladed lightsaber was to permit a faster attack, with only a minimum of movement, Saber staffs were also outstanding defensive weapons, as the doubled length of the weapon offered more surface area for parrying and deflecting. In addition to the practical advantages of the weapon, it also possessed a great emotional impact. The dual-blades enhanced the visual contact of the weapon. In star wars saber staff fight, opponents would instinctively try to track the blades separately instead of a single weapon, irresistible them.
Despite all of the benefits offered by the weapon, its weaknesses were equally obvious. Special training was necessary to wield the weapon efficiently, with those attempting to use it without such discipline likely to spear themselves. Attacking and parrying with the double-bladed lightsaber was restricted by the fact that, unlike a normal lightsaber, one could not simply readjust their posture, as the saber staff necessary them to hold it either horizontally or diagonally while fighting.
Single Saber:
- The basic lightsaber is the least hazardous to learn, has seven fighting styles and a lot of studies devoted to it over the millennia, acts as the basis for every other kind of weapon, and leaves you a hand free to pay attention to Force powers. Makashi acts as a very powerful counter to other single-saber wielders but is unsuccessful and devoid of a single saber. On that note, single sabers come in fashions that other sabers just cannot use efficiently.
- They are not the most excellent for deflecting blaster fire, though they are not bad at it as well. Single sabers are very popularly used, but the seven forms make for a lot of diversity within that predictability. It is also very easy to turn other saber types into a single saber, which means a true master will be more adaptable with something else.
- Countering a lightsaber relies on the user’s form. Dual sabers will handily overpower most forms, but are overwhelmed by Djem So, stalled by Soresu, and matched in speed by Juyo/Vaapad. The “fake” speed of a saberstaff is very powerful against single saber users who are not used to it, and can only really be met with Soresu or Juyo/Vaapad. A saber pike’s length could be utilized efficiently against Soresu to guard against the counterattacks that make up that form’s wrongdoing, and their range will counteract most other forms’ offense.
- Being so adaptable, there are no perfect conditions for a single saber. At that point, you are searching for which form you use with the saber.
Saberstaff (the Sith Lightsaber):
- Saberstaffs are exotic, so very few have studied how to defend against them. You can use the second end to counterfeit being quicker; it is simpler to block on the left and then thump on the right, for instance. The two-handed grip and length offer you the torque to parry other lightsabers efficiently. The length can also be leveraged for spinning both defensively and offensively.
- The biggest hit against a saberstaff is its predictability. If you are acquainted with where one blade is, you know where the second is. Duels against enemies that realize this tend to devolve into defensive check-and-counter fights. Moreover, the grip of a saberstaff is really strange and can make it hard to control the blade for a parry against definite angles.
- It is extremely important to note how adaptable a saberstaff is. You can simply switch off one of the blades and have a long-handled single saber, cut off the handles in the middle and have dual sabers, or switch on the second blade for a blow. At very high levels of mastery, a saberstaff is whatever bludgeon you need it to be.
- Saberstaffs are strongest against opponents who are not used to dealing with them. Darth Maul constructed his saberstaff to surprise a Jedi, turning a pommel strike into a planned victory by igniting the second end. Against lightsaber wielders who do not yet know to think of the saber staff as a straight line instead of dual sabers, it is easy to overpower them physically and mentally. Against a mass of weaker opponents, a saberstaff sacrifices no more offense than necessary while also providing plenty of defense.
- The best answer to a saberstaff is probably to overpower its speed. Dual sabers can obstruct and feint better than saberstaffs. Soresu can defend and riposte very neatly. Ataru may be fast to work; Juyo/Vaapad almost certainly will be. Niman, lightsaber pikes, and sorcery will all keep a range advantage that can give them time to leverage the environment; pikes can also match a saber staff blows for blow if the staff user closes.
