Rajasthan Royals (RR) batsman and skipper Sanju Samseong set an unwanted record during the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. During the match, he became the RR player with the most ducks in IPL history. After Ravindra Jadeha castled on his second duck ball, Samson registered his eighth duck for the franchise, more than any player.
Great late spins and IPL-winning skippers Shane Warne and Stuart Binney are trailing Samson as they registered seven ducks for the RR. Ajinkja Rahane, who currently plays for CSK, also registered five ducks for RR.
With this victory, RR became the leaders of the standings, having won three matches out of four. They have six points in total. CSK is in fifth place with two wins and two losses, as well as four points.
Going into the match, after CSK was the first to jump into the fray, RR went 175/8 in their 20 overs. After Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) fell early, Jos Buttler (52 of 36 balls, with one four and three sixes) set up a 77-run post for a second wicket with Devdutt Paddikal (38 of 26 balls, with five boundaries). In middle order, strikes from Ravicandran Ashwin (30 in 22 balls, with one 4 and two sixes) and Shimron Hetmayer (30* in 18 balls, with one 4 and two sixes) helped RR achieve a competitive result.
Ravindra Jadeha (2/21) was selected by the CSK bowlers. Tushar Deshpande (2/37) and Akash Singh (2/40) also took two wickets but leaked. Moin Ali took 1/21 in his two overs.
Chasing 176 runs, CSK lost to Ruturaj Gaikwad by a stoppage of just eight runs. This was followed by a 68-run grandstand between Ajinkya Rahane (31 of 19 balls with two fours and a six) and Devon Conway. Conway went on to make 50 of 38 six-four balls, but failed to get support from the other end.
With CSK at 113/6 in 15 overs, MS Dhoni and Jadeja tried to win it for CSK but fell short of three points. CSK finished 172/6 over 20 overs, with Dhoni (32* for 17 balls, with one four and three sixes) and Jadeya (25* for 15 balls, one four and two sixes) sewing a 59-way grandstand for the seventh wicket .
Ashwin (2/25) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/27) were selected as RR players. Adam Zampa and Sandeep Sharma each took a wicket. Ashwin’s all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match title.
