Chennai Super Kings (CSK) narrowly missed a heroic victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) game on Wednesday. It was the skipper M.S. Dhoni remained undefeated until the end, but after needing 5 runs from the final ball to win the match, Tala was unable to send the ball to the border. As a result, Rajasthan won with three rounds. However, after the match, CSK coach Steven Fleming delivered some disturbing news, suggesting that Dhoni was recovering from a knee injury.
Dhoni looked great landing some of his signature sixes, especially against spinners. Dhoni scored a whopping 32 balls in just 17 with the help of one boundary and three sixes, forming a valuable partnership with Ravindra Jadeya who scored 25 of 15 balls.
In the final over against Sandeep Sharma, who needed 21 runs from the last 6 balls, Dhoni was able to hit two sixes in the over, but Sandeep bounced back to seal his team’s three-run win.
Speaking of Dhoni, Fleming revealed that the franchise skipper is recovering from a knee injury but can still do some phenomenal things in the middle.
“He is recovering from a knee injury that can be seen in some of his movements. It hinders him somewhat. His physical form has always been very professional. He arrives a month before the start of the tournament. He is a great player. We never doubted He is just amazing,” Fleming said at a press conference.
Although it was confirmed that Dhoni was injured, Fleming did not suggest that a knee problem could prevent Dhoni from playing in upcoming games for CSK.
Speaking about the match, Dhoni himself admitted that there were a lot of point balls in the middle of the over, causing CSK to lose momentum in the chase.
“I think in the middle of the over we needed a little more rotation of shots, there wasn’t much for the lure, but they had experienced baubles and we couldn’t alternate shots. It wasn’t that hard, and ownership (of the loss) should come from the batters. It’s good that we were able to reach striking distance (to the target) as we were the last pair. It really affects NRR when you get to the last phase of the tournament,” he said.
