Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman Tilak Varma and said he would be very surprised if the youngster did not play for the country for the next six to eight months. On Tuesday, Tilak scored a decisive 41 of 29 goals and shared 68 points with skipper Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians took their first win of the season since beating the Delhi Capitals. Shastri was impressed with Tilak’s performance at IPL 2023, saying that the 20-year-old already looks like an “Indian player”.
“Already a player from India. This guy is an Indian player and I would be very surprised if he doesn’t play T20 cricket for India in the next six or eight months. a world of difference from the Indian middle class,” Shastri told Star Sports.
Shastri also suggested that the maturity shown by Tilak is a positive sign for his franchise as well as for the Indian team.
“He is only 20 years old, the maturity he shows is much older than him. This is very positive not only from the point of view of Mumbai, but also from the point of view of India.” he added.
Tilak, who was bought by Mee in a mega auction last year for Rs 1.70 crore, had a breakout season in the 2022 IPL, scoring 397 points in 14 matches with an average of 36.09.
So far, he has amassed 147 points in three matches with an impressive average of 73.5.
